Imagine your child waking up with the sun, stepping outside their canvas tent, and heading to the barn to feed the horses and let the chickens out.
This summer, we're introducing something new at Sauvie Island Stables: Island Horse Adventure Camp, a five-night overnight experience filled with horses, outdoor adventures, friendships, and all the magic of a traditional summer camp.
The True Summer Camp Experience
Campers will stay in our group canvas tents, complete with bunk beds, surrounded by the beauty of Sauvie Island. From early mornings at the barn to evenings spent sharing stories beneath the stars, we want to create the kind of summer memories children carry with them for years.
A Day in the Life at Camp
Mornings at the Barn
Our days begin with morning farm chores. While some campers help feed the horses and let the chickens out, others will help prepare breakfast.
After breakfast, campers rotate through hands-on equestrian activities, including:
Horseback riding lessons
Grooming, braiding, and horse care
Learning to polo wrap
Horse anatomy and behavior
Groundwork and horsemanship
Introduction to jumping fundamentals
Horse first aid 101
Mini Horse & Goat fun
Afternoon Island Adventures
After a morning with the horses, we'll venture beyond the barn to explore everything that makes Sauvie Island so special.
From visiting Topaz Farm and picking seasonal berries to exploring local beaches, enjoying nature, and discovering the island's agricultural roots, each day will bring a new adventure.
Evenings Under the Stars
As the sun sets, campers return to the stables for dinner, games, campfires, and time with new friends.
Then it's back to our canvas tents for a good night's sleep before another day of adventure.

What About Our Traditional Day Camps?
Don't worry! Our regular daytime horse camps will return for the remaining weeks of July & August, with the same hands-on horse experiences and farm adventures our campers have come to love.
Let Their Summer Story Begin
Our hope is to give children more than just a week at horse camp. We want them to leave with greater independence, confidence around horses, meaningful friendships, and memories of a summer spent outdoors.
We can't wait to welcome our first overnight campers to Sauvie Island Stables!
KIDS DAY CAMP
Intro to Horse Camp
Ages 6–12
This introductory horse camp is designed for children who are new to horses or have limited prior experience and are excited to learn in a relaxed, fun, and supportive farm environment. Campers will be introduced to the basics of horsemanship, including grooming, tacking up, and understanding safe behavior around horses.
While horses are a central part of our days, this camp is intentionally well-rounded and not solely focused on riding. Campers will enjoy a balance of structured learning and unstructured fun, including free play in the fields, spending time with our friendly goats, creative crafts, and farm-based activities that encourage imagination, movement, and connection to animals.
Riding time is designed to be positive and confidence-building. Each day includes approximately one hour of supervised riding activities, with each child receiving two turns on horseback per day. Riding focuses on comfort, balance, and basic steering in a calm, age-appropriate setting.
This camp is ideal for children who are curious about horses and farm life, enjoy hands-on learning, and want a fun outdoor experience.
Please note: This is an introductory camp. While campers will ride daily, the primary goal is exposure, confidence, and enjoyment rather than advanced riding skills.
